A catastrophic blight epidemic wiped out billions of American chestnuts across eastern forests, pushing a majestic keystone tree toward functional extinction. The non-profit American Chestnut Restoration initiative is now mailing out free wild-type seeds directly to home growers and garden enthusiasts. These non-GMO trees build a crucial gene reserve that can later be crossed with blight-resistant pollen lines. Anyone can sign up via the online request form, with seed shipments coordinated for seasonal spring or autumn planting.
